Depression & Low Mood
When Everything Feels Heavy

Depression doesn’t always look like tears or crisis.
Sometimes, it’s numbness. Disconnection. Going through the motions. Feeling like you’re watching your life from the outside.
It can be hard to describe and even harder to ask for help.
If you're here, you're already showing up for yourself. And that's something worth honouring.

Showing Up on Low-Energy Days
When your energy is drained, even basic things such as brushing your teeth, making a meal or texting a friend can feel impossible.
You don’t need to push through or fake being okay.
Instead, try asking: What’s the smallest way I can show up for myself right now?
- A warm drink.
- Opening a window.
- Lying down with music.
- Writing a single sentence in your journal.
Gentle counts. Small is still valid. You don’t have to earn rest or compassion.
When You Feel Nothing at All

Depression isn’t always sadness. Often, it’s nothingness. Numbness. Feeling flat, distant, or like you’ve gone missing inside your own life.
This can be just as painful, even if it’s quiet.
In these moments, you might try:
-
Naming how it feels, even if it’s just “I feel nothing”
-
Using progressive muscle relaxation to reconnect with your body
-
Choosing one small sensory action — warm water, fresh air, a textured object

Self-Care That Doesn’t Feel Like Work

When you’re low, self-care can feel like another item on your to-do list.
Instead of “fixing” yourself, think of care as offering something - a soft landing, a little ease.
Try:
-
Swapping “should” for “could”
-
Doing one thing mindfully instead of five things distractedly
-
Choosing comfort over productivity

When Motivation Disappears

This isn’t laziness.
This isn’t failure.
Low motivation is a symptom, not a character flaw. It’s your body and brain trying to survive when energy is scarce.
Some things that might help:
-
Breaking tasks into micro-steps
-
Writing a “done list” instead of a to-do list
-
Setting a 2-minute timer to just begin

When to Reach Out

If your days are feeling increasingly grey, you’re not weak for needing support, you’re human.
Whether you’re in therapy, waiting, or unsure if you even "qualify" for help, your feelings are valid, and you don’t have to carry them alone.

You Deserve a Soft Place to Land

This isn’t about “snapping out of it.”
It’s about staying kind to yourself, even when your mind is being unkind.
You’re allowed to take up space in the world, even when you’re not at your best.
Especially then.
Let’s take this one small step at a time. You’re not alone here.
